Essential Functions
The R&D Project Manager (PM) will oversee planning, implementation, tracking, and reporting of assigned medical device project(s). The PM will be the project lead for the assigned Research & Development (R&D) projects.
Success in the R&D Project Manager role requires the ability to work independently to:
- Lead a cross-functional team to identify and develop critical project elements such as:
- Project scope
- Market opportunity and competitive strategy
- User Needs and product Design Input Requirements
- Design History File elements under 21 CFR 820.30
- Design and supply chain considerations
- Regulatory strategy
- Project costs: resources (time, money, consultants, etc.), and ROI target(s)
- Project risks (identification, mitigation, management)
- Project scope
- Develop, measure, and maintain a comprehensive project plan that:
- Identifies work required to complete project
- Accounts for estimated activity durations
- Links inherent dependencies between activities
- Highlights critical path(s)
- Establishes milestones
- Manages project expenses and budget
- Identifies work required to complete project
- Manage project teams activities:
- Align on priorities and activities
- Schedule, host, and lead recurring team meetings to update and track project
- Collaboratively mediate conflicts, striving to seek the best outcome for a project
- Present project reviews with senior management, project team, or other interested parties
- Write reports on the project for management and for project sponsors/leads
- Align on priorities and activities
- Communicate to upper management on project status, team performance, and upcoming deliverables
- Ensure product development process is followed:
- Coordinate deliverables to ensure all deliverables are met per stage
- Present at gate reviews, clearly identifying the risks of the project
- Get alignment between stakeholders on prioritization and project deliverables
- Lead project presentations at portfolio sessions
- Coordinate deliverables to ensure all deliverables are met per stage
Requirements (Education, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, etc.)
- Bachelor’s degree
- Certification or degree in Project Management or related course work preferred
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Substantial knowledge and background in project management with at least 5 years of related functional experience
- Previous medical device/technology and product development experience highly valued and required/preferred
- Knowledge in ISO 13485:2016 and, FDA 21 CFR 820.30 for Design Controls
- Must be a highly skilled communicator to enable effective cross-functional project execution
- Must have strong “people skills” and be able to work up and down corporate structures
- Must have exceptional planning and organizational skills to maintain project discipline and accountability
- Project/database management applications (Microsoft Project or similar)
- MS Office product suite (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports or business correspondence.
Computer Skills
Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. Ability to learn various software programs. Ability to work with data processing and programming.
